There were no injuries reported after a Nelson couple returned home to find their Uphill residence filled with smoke a Nelson Fire Rescue media release Tuesday said.

Nelson Fire answered a call at 3:07 p.m. after a Nelson couple returned home from an appointment in Trail to a house full of black smoke.

Nelson Fire Rescue quickly dispatched two duty members to the Uphill home.

“When the crew arrived, they were able to determine that the fire was not still actively burning and initiated an investigation into the cause,” the Nelson Fire Rescue media release said.

“The owners had opened up doors and windows and there was no visible smoke remaining.”

As a precaution Nelson Fire Rescue crew and occupants ensured physical distancing and wore N95 masks during the investigation.

Nelson Fire and Rescue said the fire originated on the stove and did not spread to the counters or cabinets.

“A plastic cutting board had been inadvertently left on the stove and an adjacent element was left on low,” the media release said.

“The radiant heat from the element was enough to ignite the cutting board producing a significant amount of black smoke. The residence did sustain a moderate amount of smoke damage.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said two firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine with no injuries reported as a result of this incident.

Nelson Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that flu-like symptoms can be very similar to carbon monoxide poisoning and to ensure that they have a working carbon monoxide alarm in their homes.
