UPDATED: Skier killed in avalanche near Golden from Leavenworth Washington

RCMP confirmed the woman killed in an avalanche near Golden Friday was from Leavenworth, Washington.

RCMP report at approximately 2:30 p.m., a group of back country skiers were caught in an avalanche in the Mount Wotan area of British Columbia. 

 A group of six skiers had been traversing in back country terrain on Mount Wotan when an avaranche occurred,  burying one of the skiers partially and another entirely. 

The first individual was extricated without injury, however the second one, when located, had no vital signs.  Her companions immediately initiated CPR.

The Golden/Field RCMP were made aware of an Emergengy SPOT Beacon activation from the Mount wotan area and the Golden and District Search and Rescue (GADSAR) through the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) were activated.

A commercial helicopter flying in the area responded to the radio calls for assistance made by the party and attended the site.

GADSAR personnel attended to the scene and prepared the patient for air lift to the Golden Hospital.

CPR was maitained throughout transport and the patient was subsequenfly airtifted to the Foothiils Hospital in Calgary by STARS.

Doctors at the Foothills Hospital continued efforts to revive the patient, but she was pronounced deceased at 12:40 a.m. Saturday (April 12).

Skier killed in avalanche near Golden

A female skier was killed Friday in an avalanche while backcountry skiing near Golden.

The avalanche happened southeast of Fairy Meadows Lodge on the Gothics Glacier at around 3:15 p.m.

The skiers was part of a ski tour group with Fair Meadows.

Sources said the skier was buried by the slide for 45 minutes before being dug out by others in the group.

The skier was flown to Golden and later taken to a Calgary hospital, but she did not survive.

The name of the skier was not released as the family is being notified.
