UPDATED: RCMP officer shot in Kamloops now conscious

RCMP Media spokesperson, Cpl. Cheryl Bush, said Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud, of Kamloops RCMP, continues his recovery following the shooting incident that occurred on (Wednesday) December 3rd.
“Although still in intensive care, Cpl. Michaud is now conscious and able to speak to his family,” Cpl. Bush said.
“His medical progress is very uplifting news for his family, colleagues, and the community as a whole.”
“Fellow RCMP officers from across the country, colleagues in Kamloops and the general public have been incredibly generous with their well wishes and contributions to the Michaud family during this difficult time.” Cpl. Bush added.
Cpl. Bush said Kamloops RCMP Major Crimes Unit continues to work on the case surrounding this incident in preparation for upcoming court dates.
Although other arrests were made during the subsequent investigation, Kenneth Michael Knutson remains the only individual charged directly in relation to the shooting of Cpl. Michaud.
RCMP officer shot in Kamloops remains in intensive care
Cpl. Cheryl Bush of the Kamloops RCMP said in a media release, Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud, who was shot during a routine traffic stop in Kamloops Wednesday (December 3) remains in intensive care.
Cpl. Bush said Cpl. Michaud underwent a second surgery Thursday night and continues to recover at Royal Inland Hospital from the gunshot injuries he sustained.
The family of Cpl. Michaud remains at his side and his RCMP colleagues are looking after all of the family’s needs at this time.

Man charged in Kamloops shooting in court Thursday
Kenneth Michael Knutsonm, the suspect charged with the shooting a Kamloops RCMP officer yesterday made his first court appearance on Thursday afternoon.
Knutson, 36, was charged with attempted murder using a firearm, aggravated assault of a peace officer, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and discharging a firearm with intent to wound, maim, disfigure or endanger life.
Police have also seized the vehicle used in the traffic stop in which Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud was shot early Wednesday morning. He remains in critical but stable condition in intensive care and is expected to undergo further surgery.
Three other females have also been arrested, but police say it’s too early to speculate on what charges they may face – one of the women was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants.
The IIO has also released the investigation back to the Kamloops RCMP after determining the probe into the suspect’s injuries aren’t serious to proceed.
According to the IIO, Knutson was shot in the arm when the officer assisting Michaud returned fire after the initial shots had been fired.
