RCMP said they have identified the person involved after four students from Nakusp Secondary School were approached by a suspicious woman in a mini-van Wednesday.

“This situation is still under investigation, however, the evidence gathered does not suggest that this incident was an attempted abduction or involved any other criminal activity,” RCMP said in a media release Friday.

RCMP said officers continue to work with the woman, school officials, students and their parents towards a resolution of this matter.

Police said no criminal charges are being considered by investigators at this time.

The RCMP would like to thank the public for their information and assistance pertaining to this investigation.

Nakusp RCMP report suspicious interaction between woman, Grade 9 students

Nakusp RCMP are asking the public to be on the lookout for a suspicious woman in a white Dodge mini-van following an interaction with four students Wednesday on the grounds of the Nakusp Secondary School.

RCMP said in a media release Wednesday that at approximately 12:30 p.m., the students were approached near the ball diamond at the school by a woman driving a white van.

“Four Grade 9 students walking to a nearby ball diamond for physical education class noticed a white van drive by, then circle back and park in front of them,” RCMP said.

“A woman described as in her late 50’s or early 60’s stepped out of the vehicle and asked the youth to “come here” and “I really need a babysitter.”

Police said at one point during the interaction, the woman grabbed one of the students by the arm which prompted the student to kick the woman in order to get away.

“The woman returned to her vehicle and departed the area,” RCMP said.

Police said the students reported the incident to the principal later that afternoon, who immediately notified police.

“This is a very unique investigation and the Nakusp RCMP are working toward obtaining more information on this incident,” said RCMP Cpl Jaime Moffat.

“We feel this situation should be a good reminder to parents to have discussions with their children to reinforce proper responses to interactions with strangers. It’s important that situations like this get reported to police or school officials immediately.”

The woman is described a:

  • Caucasian, heavy set with wrinkles on her face.
  • Woman age, late 50’s, early 60’s, had grey or white hair which the students described as “curly.”
  • Van is believed to be a white Dodge Caravan, likely a 2005 model.
  • No licence plate was obtained.

Nakusp RCMP are asking for assistance from the public to help identify the woman and vehicle involved in this interaction.

If anyone has information or witnessed this event, they are asked to call Nakusp RCMP at (250) 265-3677 or BC Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
