For the second time in less than a month customers of Nelson Hydro were left in the dark after the City of Nelson and surrounding areas experienced a system-wide outage.

The outage occurred shortly after noon Sunday, lasting for a few hours for most of City of Nelson users.

Some rural areas saw power not back on until after 5 p.m.

Nelson Hydro Line Manager Dan Manchur said the cause was a loss of supply from FortisBC, causing staff to scramble to get the power back due to the cold weather affecting the region.

In January, trees falling over power lines due to a heavy snowfall caused a similar system wide outage in the latter part of January 28th.

Power was restored to most of the City of Nelson by midnight.

However, rural crews worked feverously to restore power due to down trees taking out lines by the next day.

The outage forced Kootenay Lake School board to cancel classes at J.V. Humphries High School in Kaslo, Jewett Elementary in Meadow Creek, Redfish Elementary on the North Shore near Harrop and Crawford Bay Schools on the East Side of Kootenay Lake.

System Wide Outage for Nelson Hydro

Nelson Hydro dealt with a system wide outage for throughout the utility.

A message on the City of Nelson Facebook Page said the outage is from Bonnington to Coffee Creek.

Nelson Hydro said crews have been dispatched and thanks the public for patience as work is done to restore power.

Power was restored approximately two hours later.
