One person was injured following a house fire in the 1200 block of Front Street Wednesday morning Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release on the City of Nelson Facebook page.

The fire was reported at 8 a.m., with Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responding with 18 firefighters as crews worked to keep the blaze from spreading to neighbouring houses.

“Crews arrived quickly and made a rapid initial attack,” the Facebook post said.

"One person was rescued from the home and sent to the hospital with undetermined injuries.”

After extinguishing in the fire at 1214 Front Street near Poplar Street, crews remained on scene to observe for any hotspots.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services was joined by Nelson Hydro, Nelson Police Department and BC Ambulance at the scene.

The fire remains under investigation.

Front Street (Highway 3A) was opened to traffic by noon.

Public urged to dig out fire hydrants

The recent snowstorm has left many hydrants in the city buried with snow.

Nelson Fire and Rescue firefighters said as of Tuesday, the hydrant near the house was completely covered with snow.

“Fortunately, our Public Works crews dug the hydrant yesterday, which was critical in allowing the fire attack to occur without delay,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

“Our crews would have been delayed if they had searched for the fire hydrant and had to dig it out.”

Nelson Fire Rescue Services is asking for any assistance the public can provide in finding the fire hydrant nearest their home and making sure the hydrant is accessible in case of fire.
