Lakeside Park is now open for swimming.

In a release Saturday on the City of Nelson website, staff said a second round of beach E.coli sampling indicates that results are normal and Lakeside Park is now safe for swimming.

“The most likely cause of reduced water quality is waterfowl activity; and the City will continue to work towards addressing this and all impacts to our recreational water,” the website said.

The City of Nelson thanks the publuc for its patience.

Previous Story: Increase in E. coli levels closes Lakeside Park to swimming

The City of Nelson is closing Lakeside Park to swimming due to an an increase in E. coli levels.

In a release on the City website Friday, staff is encouraging residents NOT to swim at Lakeside Park, the popular summer area located near the Big Orange Bridge.

“The City is advising residents that our beach water quality sample collected on August 14thindicates an increase in E. coli levels at Lakeside Park swimming area, which exceed Health Canada Guidelines for Recreational Water Quality,” the release said.

“It is suspected the increase in E. coli is likely due to waterfowl activity.”

City staff said it is re-sampled the water (Friday) morning, with results expected (Saturday) morning, and will issue an update to the public when results are available.

The City anticipates the higher than normal E. coli readings to be temporary.
