Rough opening day at soccer provincials for LVR Bombers

The L.V. Rogers Bombers are going to need a little help if the squad is going to advance into the Final Four at the B.C. High School AA Girl’s Soccer Championships in Penticton.

The Bombers dropped a tough 3-2 decision to host Princess Margaret MustangsThursday afternoon to drop into fourth spot in Pool C standings.

Despite dominating the play, LVR fell behind 2-0 to Maggie before Naomi Perkins scored her first of two in the game to put the Kootenay reps on the board.

The Bombers fought to get back in the game, but the final result had the host school edging LVR by a goal in a very physically-played game.

One Mustang player was ejected from the tournament after punching Bomber Emma Wheeldon in the face.

A Bomber spokesperson said Wheeldon was tapped on the shoulder by the Mustang player, and when the Bomber player turned, the Maggie player sucker punched her.

Earlier in the day, LVR rallied to tie Mark Isfeld of Comox 3-3.

Perkins scored twice for LVR with Erica Augsten adding a single.

After Day one of the tournament, Mark Isfeld leads the pool standings with four points. Smithers and Princess Margaret are tied for second, each with three points with LVR fourth.

The Bombers finished the 2013 tournament in fourth spot.

LVR faces Smithers at 9 a.m. Friday in the final round robin match before teams head into the playoff round.
