The L.V. Rogers Bombers lost a tough 2-0 decision to St.Michael’s of Victoria to fall out of the medal round at the B.C. High School AA Girl’s Fieldhockey Championships Friday in Oliver.

“We played as well as we could have,” said Bomber coach Val Gibson. “It was a great fieldhockey game.”

“Unfortunately, we are out of the medals now and going for 5th – 8th,” Gibson added.

The Bombers defeated Glenlyon Norfolk of Victoria 1-0 in the final round robin contest Friday morning.

The lack of goal production proved to be crucial to the Bombers as Crofton House of Vancouver edged LVR by a single goal to capture the division title.

Jena Wheeldon scored on a penalty stroke as LVR finished second in the pool.

“There are no major injuries and the girls are in good spirits . . .  though we really wanted to give SMUS more of a run,” Gibson said.

Bombers undefeated after Day one of AA Fieldhockey Championships

The L.V. Rogers Bombers experienced its best start in years, finishing undefeated after Day one of the B.C. High School AA Girl’s Fieldhockey Championships Thursday in Oliver.

Hailee Gerun, Jena Wheeldon, and Sarah Wade each scored as LVR knocked off Rockridge of North Vancouver 3-1 to open the tournament.

The Bombers then played Crofton House of Vancouver to a scoreless tie in the afternoon game thanks in part to the stellar goalkeeping of Tara Yowek.

Crofton House is the top-ranked school at the provincial tournament.

Coach Val Gibson was impressed with the efforts of Grade 12 players Abbie Bouchier-Willans and Hailee Gerun.

The Bombers now meet 12th-ranked Glenlyon Norfolk of Victoria in action Friday morning while Crofton House plays Rockridge.

The results will determine whether LVR advances to the championship round later in the day.

Currently Crofton House (5-0) has a better goal average than LVR (3-1).
