UPDATED: AbbyPD officer succumbed to injuries suffered in Baker Street altercation

Nelson Police said in a media release Wednesday, the 55-year-old Abbotsford Police Officer who tried to intervene in a street incident last week in the Heritage City has died from his injuries.

Nelson Police responded to the report of a disturbance in the on Thursday, July 16 on Baker Street, where officers found a seriously injured male.

“The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and has since died,” Nelson Police said.

“Abbotsford Police Department has previously confirmed that this male was one of their officers,” Nelson Police added.

Nelson Police said a 26-year-old male was identified and apprehended on scene. The man is facing charges of aggravated assault.

Police said this investigation is ongoing and will continue to develop in the coming days and weeks.

“We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased officer,” Nelson Police said.

Abby PD officer injured in Baker Street altercation not expected to survive

The Abbotsford Police Department said in a media release that it is with heavy hearts it updates the current medical status of one of its officers, Constable Allan Young.

“Constable Allan Young remains on life support in the BC interior and is not expected to survive his injuries,” the AbbyPD media release said.

The Abbotsford Police continue to support Constable Young’s family. 

“Allan treated everyone with kindness and respect,” said Chief Constable Mike Serr. “He always had time for a laugh and a joke.”

“Everyone that met Allan would walk away happier,” Serr added.

“Allan was never too busy for his friends and family and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to help. Allan had a zest for life that was unparalleled with a dedication and passion for policing and the Abbotsford Police Department.

“He will be missed.”

Nelson Police said a 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident. 

Nelson Police Department General Investigation Section, in consultation with RCMP Major Crimes Unit, are continuing the investigation into this matter.

“We extend a heart-felt thank you to the first responders, medical staff and civilians who continue to assist Constable Young and his family and truly appreciate the support that we have received,” the AbbyPD media release said.
