The Nelson Selects finished seventh overall at the BC Soccer Les Sinnott Memorial U15 Boys Provincial B Cup Tournament Sunday in 100 Mile House.

Nelson bounced Quesnel 3-0 in Consolation Round action.

“As disappointing as the tournament was, there was an encouraging aspect,” said Nelson skipper Kerry Dyck.

“None of the teams we played were out of our class, and I feel next year, if we work on improving our shooting, eliminate the errors and have a healthy roster, we have every reason to believe we can do very well.”

Nelson entered the tournament up against the wall from the opening whistle.

Nelson opened with a few injury issues, most notably to number one striker.

The player, unable to play in the tournament, accounted for close to half of our goals during the year.

The Selects then lost its top keeper to injury after the second game and second leading scorer from the season.

Nelson lost 5-0 to Langley United in the opener Thursday before dropping a tough 2-1 decision to Sanich Fusion Friday.

The Selects concluded the tournament Saturday with a 1-0 setback to Bulkley Valley Rapids.

“We generated 15 and a whopping 24 attempts on goal, respectively, in those two games, but only converted a single goal,” Dyck explained.

“We were definitely missing our number one striker, who I am certain would have scored on many of the chances that we missed, had he been able to play.”

However, Nelson was able to rally to leave 100 Mile House with a victory.

“Again we dominated, with another 24 shots (15 on target, 9 off) to their 6 (none of which were on target) and at least this time we managed to score on 3 of our shots,” Dyck said.

“Even at that, finishing was still an issue that we will have to work on, as we should have had at least double the goals in that game.

“But it was nice for the boys to at least end on a win.”
