On the recommendation of the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is downgrading the Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert for the area from south of Popou Rd north to Ringrose Creek.

The RDCK said this reduction to an Alert means residents can return to their properties, but must be prepared to leave on short notice should conditions change.

The Trozzo Creek wildfire was first discovered on July 9 and is currently estimated to be 5,202 hectares. The BCWS has determined the cause to be lightning. More information can be found on the BC Wildfire Service Wildfires of Note page.

The RDCK advises residents on Evacuation Alert to remain vigilant and be prepared to leave the area at a moment’s notice. It is recommended to prepare an emergency kit and ensure preparedness, including moving pets and livestock to a safe area, in the event the situation worsens and an Evacuation Order is enforced. Part of your plan should include where you can go if evacuated.

Updates or changes to the Evacuation Alert will be provided via the RDCK websiteFacebook and Twitter. For details about evacuations and emergency preparedness, along with other resources, please visit www.rdck.ca/eocinfo.

BC Wildfire Service not able to accept donations of any type

The BC Wildfire Service said Tuesday it is aware of several requests for donations and online fundraising pages soliciting donations to buy masks and other personal protective equipment for firefighters on the Trozzo Creek Wildfire.

Although the BC Wildfire Service appreciates the sentiment behind these offers, there is no need for additional supplies and we are not able to accept donations of any type.

“All BCWS personnel and contractors are provided personal protective equipment (PPE) related to their jobs and COVID-19 related supplies,” the BC Wildfire Service media release said.

“Personnel adhere to COVID-19 public health orders and guidelines to ensure that operations can continue safely throughout the province. In indoor areas, all personnel are required to physically distance, wear masks, and sanitize,” BC Wildfire Service said.

“As this is a requirement, the necessary products are provided, including masks.”

The BC Wildfire Service advises the public to please be wary of online requests of this nature as they are unsolicited by the BC Wildfire Service and any donations made cannot be accepted. We appreciate your understanding and support.

“So far, the 2021 season has been a busy one for our crews,” BC Wildfire Service said.

“If you are looking for a way to actively support crews and personnel we encourage you to post signs thanking them for their work.”
