Trio arrested after being caught on video attempting to steal bike

An attempted bike theft near the Kootenay Co-op store on Baker Street have three suspects awaiting court appearances Nelson Police Department Nate Holt said in a media release Tuesday.

The incident started at 7:42 p.m. Sunday when NPD received a call of an attempted bike theft at the Kootenay Co-op grocery store.

All three suspects, two men and a woman, were captured on CCTV footage at that location attempting to cut the bike lock with a tool.

Holt said one of the males was quickly identified by police, prompting members to attend a location known to be frequented by the man.

On the same CCTV footage was a van.

“NPD members located the van and the suspects; all three were arrested for attempted theft under $5000,” Holt explained.

“Upon investigation at the arrest scene police determined that the van was a stolen vehicle from Alberta.”

Holt said the three suspects have been charged with multiple related offences, with the male driver of the vehicle is being held in custody pending court appearance.

He said the remaining two remaining suspects have been released on extensive conditions with a future court date.
