Tips for having a fun, safe Halloween

The streets and side roads will be filled with ghosts and goblins Monday as trick-or-treaters get into the haunted spirit on Halloween.
Local police will be out patrolling in and around the Heritage City looking for any suspicious activity.
Drivers should use extreme caution as sunset will happen at approximately 5:30 p.m., which means that most trick-or-treaters searching for candy and treats around neighbourhoods in the dark.
Tips for homeowners or renters:
- Ensure the house is well-lit.
- Ensure the property is safe and clear of obstacles for foot traffic.
- Use battery powered electric lights or glow sticks for pumpkins instead of candles.
- Make sure your pets are safe and secure indoors for the evening.
- Do not participate if sick.
Tips for trick-or-treaters:
- Trick-or-treat with a friend or in a group if not supervised by an adult.
- Tell parents or a responsible adult where you are planning to trick-or-treat and when you will be back home. Carry a cell phone if available.
- Always make sure you are visible in the darkness. Carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing.
- Wear a proper fitting costume and dress for the conditions. Avoid costumes that limit your senses like vision and hearing. Include a non-medical mask as part of your costume.
- Costume weaponry should be easily identifiable as an imitation.
- Stay on the sidewalks or to the side of the road. Face traffic when you are walking down the road without sidewalks.
- Only attend well-lit homes and skip the dark ones.
- Have parents check candy before its eaten . . . but don’t let parents eat all of the candy.
- Do not eat any treats that are unwrapped or look like they may have been tampered with.
- Do not participate if sick.
Tips for Drivers:
- Drive slowly in residential areas where children are more likely to be trick-or-treating.
- Watch out for children, many of whom may be wearing costumes with masks that make it difficult for them to see. Children are excited and may not follow all road safety precautions.
- Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
