Tips to catch counterfeit bills

The RCMP has listed March as Fraud Prevention month, which is also an excellent timing for a reminder about counterfeit bills.

Although counterfeit levels have dropped dramatically in recent years, the routine checking of security features on bank notes is your first line of defence.

While bank notes have many security features the public is advise to concentrate on remembering just a few of them.

And check more security features if first checks raise your suspicions.

Use the same method for checking all notes: touch, tilt, look at the note, and with the new notes, look through them.

The new features are obvious and easy to use. They’re intuitive, even without formal training.

Remember that it is a criminal offence to knowingly use or re-circulate a counterfeit bill, or to keep one without a lawful reason.
