Thieves walk off with part of Nelson's Sports History from museum in Civic Centre

Nelson’s Sports Museum, located on the concourse of the Civic Arena, suffered a huge loss during the August long weekend when a few baseball jerseys and bomber jacked was stolen by thieves.
“The items, two 1950’s baseball jerseys and a 1960’s Notre Dame bomber jacket were noticed missing on August 5,” said Nelson Sports Council executive director, Kim Palfenier in a written release.
“They were last seen in place Saturday August 2,” Palfenier added.
Palfenier said Nelson Police Department is aware of the situation and suggest Sports Council members and the public to be on the lookout for the items at pawn shops and online/eBay for sales.
The museum opened to the public in July of 2012.
The idea for the museum came during the CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada, which Nelson hosted in 2007.
During a trip to Touchstones Nelson to see many of the sports items on display, McDonnell was issued a challenge by two people in the know — Peter Webster and Pete Quevillon.
Webster is the first manager of the Canadian National Ski Team when it trained at Notre Dame University in Nelson and a person also associated with the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in Vancouver while Quevillon is associated as a director with KidSport B.C.
Items in the Civic Centre Arena, now run by the Nelson Sports Council, are from the early years in Nelson sports history — including photos of the gala opening of the Civic Centre Arena in November of 1935 — along with pictures and jerseys from hockey, lacrosse and baseball teams along with key individuals from yester-year.
“So much effort goes into collecting and preparing the items for an authentic display, it is sad that they could potentially be damaged, lost or ruined,” Palfenier said.
