Temporary ER service changes at health centre in Kaslo

Due to limited physician availability, Kaslo and area residents are advised physician services at the Victorian Community Health Centre Emergency Department will be limited in the evenings from Dec. 25, 2010 to Jan. 9, 2011.

The Emergency Department will remain open, however, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. The on-call physician will only be available for the most urgent cases.

All patients arriving to the emergency department will be assessed as usual by the health centre’s trained nurses.

Patients with less urgent needs may be offered other appropriate options. In some cases, patients may be redirected or transferred by ambulance to another facility for appropriate care.

If urgent medical attention is required, people should not hesitate to go to the emergency department or call 9-1-1.

Full physician services will resume in Kaslo on Jan. 10, 2011.

During this time people are encouraged to use the ER wisely and be aware of steps they can take to avoid unnecessary visits to the hospital:

• If you need non-urgent care, first contact your family doctor.

• See your doctor before the weekend and/or holidays when possible.

• Visit the walk-in clinic in Nelson.

• Note the weekend and holiday hours of your local pharmacy/drug store, and ensure your prescriptions are up to date.

Note:

Call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, if you are unsure about your need to go to the emergency department. This service is available 24 hours a day.
