The first ever West Kootenay Tech Talent Career Fair held last week at the Prestige Lakeside Resort was deemed a success with more than 70 potential job seekers attending the event.

The Fair, hosted by the Kootenay Career Development Society, coordinates the West Kootenay Tech program, which is funded by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

"There was huge community engagement  — especially for the ThoughtExchange hosted panel discussion,” said Felicity Howell, Program Coordinator- West K TECH. “It was fantastic to see the high level of interest from people who travelled from as far afield as as Kaslo, Rossland and New Denver to learn about opportunities and connect with employers.”

The evening opened with a fireside discussion about tech careers coordinated Rossland company Thoughtexchange.

The discussion included Angela Garinger and Alex Chapple of Thoughtexchange Will Buchanan, Program Manager at Traction on Demand, Sarah Finall, Outreach Officer, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and Mike Lazier, Regional Manager Kootenays for F12.net.

Other employers hosting exhibits included, Thoughtexchange, Traction on Demand, Sitkum / F12, Selkirk College, MIDAS Fab Lab, Nelson Design Collective, Okanagan College, Work BC, Fortis BC, Retreat Guru, Canada Learning Code, CoreLogic and SMRT1.

"There's already significant interest in another tech career fair to be held potentially in the spring," Howell added.
