Nelson Fire Rescue report one person was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital late Sunday night following a single-vehicle accident on Svoboda Road.

In a media release Monday, Nelson Fire Rescue said as many as eight firefighters responded to the call at 10:58 p.m. Sunday to the report of a motor vehicle incident involving a vehicle that had left the road, rolled down the bank and caught on fire.

Svoboda Road is located in the mountain south of Selkirk College Tenth Street Campus.

When fire crews arrived, flames had spread to the surrounding forest.

“Both occupants and the dog were out of the vehicle on arrival,” Nelson Fire Rescue said. “The driver was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital with undetermined injuries; the passenger and the dog were uninjured.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said the primary objective upon arrival was to stop further spread of the fire to the nearby trees.

“Due to the steep terrain crews had to use rescue ropes to get into a position to be able to fully extinguish the fire without being directly below the vehicle,” Nelson Fire Rescue said.

Western Auto Wreckers were dispatched to the scene and once they had removed the vehicle the crews were able to finish extinguishing the remaining hot spots.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the Nelson Police Department.

Along with the fire crew, Nelson Fire Rescue said one fire engine, one tender truck and one utility vehicle were dispatch to the accident scene.

“No firefighter injuries were reported as a result of this incident,” Nelson Fire Rescue said.
