Nicola Hare, Trans Connect Program Coordinator, says that peer support is significant in helping trans and gender diverse people feel seen and supported.

Trans Connect started in the early 2000s as a peer support program at ANKORS.

“The value of peer support cannot be understated,” says Hare.

Trans Connect offers community education, workshops, and consulting for service providers, businesses, community groups, and schools to increase allyship and awareness about the transgender community.

The program run groups for LGBTQ2IA+ youth and trans, two-spirit, intersex, and gender diverse community members and offer one-on-one support for gender diverse people and their families.

“Peer support can nurture resilient, interdependent mindsets in the community. It is a model that has been proven to support our mental health, foster a sense of belonging and can be a protective factor in gender diverse people’s lives,” says Hare.
