Support for the Sinixt Nation hits The Royal

Awareness and silence are urged in support of the Sinixt Nation.

Friends of the beleaguered First Nation and now the Perry Ridge Wilderness Preserve Initiative are invited to an awareness raising benefit concert and silent auction on Sunday, Nov. 28 at The Royal on Baker (1 p.m. to midnight).

The Sinixt are currently preparing for a Supreme Court of BC battle for their constitutional right to be consulted on development projects in their territory, and have joined with the Perry Ridge Water Users Association (PRWUA) in the shared goal of protecting the wilderness.

There will also be an all ages benefit at the Vallican Whole Community Centre on Sunday, Dec 12.

Musical performers will include Adham Shaikh, Panda and Terradactagon, with keynote speakers (around 5 p.m.) including Marilyn James (Sinixt), Marilyn Burgoon (PRWUA), Roselyn Grady (13 Grandmothers), Michael Smith, Shanoon (of the Forest), Eloise Charet (WaterWalk), Storm Bird (Glacier/Howser), Lola Campbell (Sinixt) and spoken word poet Blair Leamen.

Sliding scale admission is $5 to $100. All proceeds will be shared by the Sinixt Nation and Perry Ridge Water Users Association.

Silent auction

Silent auction items include massage, acupuncture, CDs from local musicians, drums and music lessons, website and graphic design time, recording time, original art, photography, clothing, jewelry, flatbags, poetry books, health products, Garageband recording lessons, essential oils, deer hide baby moccasins, elk hide beaded belt buckle, tea and tincture basket and gift certificates for food.

The performances
The night dance party will kick off around 7 p.m. with Wholesome Jones, P.A.N.D.A. with Gemma Luna and Gisto, Terradactagon, the Wassabi duo of Gisto and M3, and capped off by Adham Shaikh.

The night will also include dance performances, with a Cumbia dance by Slava Doval, a sword dance by Shauna Robertson and a dance performance by Sarah Connelly.
