Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski is coming to a coffee shop near you.

The NDP member of parliament is hitting the coffee shops in the ridings to get an idea of how to improve Canada’s electoral system and ensure that every vote counts equally.

“In the last two federal elections, parties that only received 39% of the vote formed a majority government with 100% of the power – this is not a fair system,” said Stetski in a media release.

“The current government has promised to make changes, but those changes need to reflect the desires of Canadians across the country, not just the interests of the party in power.

“It is important for me to hear from the people of Kootenay-Columbia on this important issue, so I can take your views back to Ottawa.”

During Stetski’s Summer Democratic Reform tour, the former Cranbrook Mayor will be stopping in 14 communities to hear from residents of Kootenay-Columbia.

The tour begins August 9 in Fernie (Mugshots Cafe) and Sparwood (Public Library).

After a brief time away, Stetski picks up the tour in Kimberley (Snowdrift Cafe) and Cranbrook (Hotshots Cafe) August 15.

The next day, August 16, the tour travels to Creston (Break in Time), Salmo (Dragonfly Café) and Ymir (The Goods) before stopping in Nelson (Empire Coffee) and Kaslo (BlueBelle Bistro) August 17.

August 18 Stetski is in Meadow Creek (Drifters Pub) and Revelstoke (Conversations) before the tour concludes in Golden (Golden Bakery), Invermere (Invermere Bakery) and Spillicheen (Spilli Bean Cafe) August 19.

Times can be found on Stetski’s website and Facebook page.

“Canada has been using its current electoral system since before the invention of the automobile, and there is a broad consensus that changes need to be made” said Stetski.

“I encourage everyone across our region to join me and be a part of this important conversation about strengthening our democracy.”
