Deborah Loxam-Kohl – The Sound of … (silence)

Artist-in-residence at Oxygen Art Centre (to Feb. 10, 2011)

By Fiona Brown

Deborah Loxam-Kohl is artist-in-residence at Oxygen Art Centre through to Feb. 10, 2011 where she is exploring the use of felted wool forms to construct a large-scale sculptural installation with the working title The Sound of… (silence).

The project emerged out of Loxam-Kohl’s growing awareness of and sensitivity to noise and experiments with introducing the prospect of silence back into the built environment.

Using low-relief sculptural forms and the natural sound-dampening qualities of wool, the work engages at both an aesthetic level as well as altering the acoustic qualities of a space having high ceilings and concrete floors.

Loxam-Kohl is the inventor of the form felting machine and process, which she is applying in the making of the work.
