The L.V. Rogers Bombers dropped a 4-1 decision to St. Michael’s University of Vancouver Island Wednesday to finish 12th overall at the BC High School AA Boy’s Soccer Championships in Burnaby.

Notre Dame of Vancouver won the tournament by defeating St. Thomas Aquinas of North Vancouver in the final.

“The competition in Burnaby was as skilled as ever and our boys impressed many of the lower mainland coaches,” said Bomber coach Caleb Morton.

“Although we did not break the top ten, which was definitely within our grasp, we never quit, and were definitely unlucky to concede the first goal in three out of five of our matches.”

LVR finished the round robin draw with a 1-1-1 record, posting a win over Matthew McNair of Richmond 3-1 and finishing in a tie with Carihi of Campbell River.

The Bombers lost to tournament runnerup St. Thomas Aquinas 6-1 in the other round robin match.

“We placed third in our pool, which means we played for the 9th-12th placing, which is the best this team has done in recent memory,” said Morton, prior to Wednesday’s consolation match against St. Michael’s University.

“Since 2003, we have not placed better than 11th,” Morton added.

Moss Caney scored for LVR during the opening tie against Carihi. Matteo Chirico was solid for the Bombers between the pipes, making a game-saving save in the final minute of the contest.

Caney scored from the penalty spot for the only marker against St. Thomas Aquinas. Against Matthew McNair, Caney, Matteo Mushumanski and Keegan Carmichael scored for the Bombers.

During consolation play, the Bombers dropped a 2-0 decision to Sa-Hali of Kamloops.

LVR, consisting of players from Nelson Soccer Association, advanced to the BC Tournament as the Kootenay Zone Champ.
