The Kootenay/Boundary region can expect a high accumulation of snow said Environment Canada Friday morning as a Snowfall Warning has been issued area.

“A long period of snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm is expected,” Environment Canada said Friday.

“Snow will begin overnight tonight and become heavy Saturday morning as a strong Pacific frontal system moves across the B.C. interior.”

Heavy snow is expected for the Kinbasket, Arrow Lakes – Slocan Lakes, West Kootenay and Boundary regions.

Snowfall is expected overnight Friday and into early Sunday morning.

Environment Canada is calling for snowfall amounts of:

  • 20 to 40 cm for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass
  • 10 to 15 cm for Kootenay Lake and East Kootenay
  • Up to 30 cm for Elk Valley, near Fernie and Morrisey

“Heavy snow will taper to a few flurries Saturday overnight into Sunday morning,” Environment Canada said.

Drivers should be prepared for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions as visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
