Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Boundary/West Kootenay regions.

Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain.

“An upper low-pressure system over Vancouver Island will result in a southerly flow of moist, unstable air over the southern interior today,” the Environment Canada website said.

“A few thunderstorms developing along the US border near noon will move northward during the afternoon. There is the potential of an isolated severe thunderstorm giving rainfall amounts up to 20 mm, 2 cm hail and wind gusts to 70 km/h.”

Environment Canada said the storm will most likely bring intense lightning along with heavy downpours that can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors,” Environment Canada said.

Environment Canada said weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions which resulted in warning being issued for anyone driving the Paulson, Kootenay Pass highways.
