After nine months in the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Program workshop, students are emerging from behind workbenches ready to showcase their furniture’s fine lines.

Each wood creation is a solid representation of the unique personality each student brings to the table. Celebrate their year of hard work, splinters and beautiful finished projects at an exhibition that runs May 25 to 27 in Nelson.

“I am sure that everyone attending our show will find something that resonates with them,” says student Eilish Rodden. “And I’m eager to interact with the public to learn more about what draws a connection. I want to know what people are looking for in furniture design.”

Rodden has a long-time love of furniture and design that brought her to the program. She found this year’s learning at the Silver King Campus some of the “best education I have received.”

“I come out of this program with incredible woodworking experience and skills that are applicable to life,” Rodden says.

She will be showing her mahogany coffee table with intricate veneer work and a vibrant ash bookshelf cabinet.

Student Chris Bradley will show a hard maple work bench, a black cherry hand-carved box and a small dovetail jointed cabinet made out of ash and black cherry.

He too is eager to put his work out on display for the community to view.

“I invite critical feedback from the public,” he says.

Bradley says a combination of great instructors and classmates made for an excellent learning environment. This year’s class even took on a large group project – a complete kitchen for fellow student Kyle Atkinson.

“Everyone did a nice professional job,” says Atkinson. “My kitchen is fantastic.”

The Fine Woodworking Year-End Exhibition runs during this season’s first Blue Night, an evening art event hosted in multiple venues throughout Nelson in the Nelson Trading Company at 402 Baker Street.

There will be select pieces for sale as well as a raffle draw for a Nelson-inspired desk designed by students. Enjoy live music and chat with students on hand eager to explain their designs.

The opening gala will take place on Friday night 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. where there will be non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. The public is welcome Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Fine Woodworking Program at Selkirk College prepares students for apprenticeship positions in the cabinet maker (joiner) trade or for careers as fine furniture builders. Learn more at selkirk.ca/fine-woodworking http://selkirk.ca/fine-woodworking.
