Due to the ever-evolving nature of COVID, the plans for the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Gallery have also been, ever-evolving.

However, things are now finalized for the May 28th online premiere, which features:

  • each students profile/portfolio
  • each students pieces that will be for sale (appears to be about 6-10 works that will be up for sale including small boxes and large cabinets)
  • a virtual walk-around of our shop and every student bench with their work displayed
  • contact information for each student (we’re hoping this leads to employment connections)

There is also a secondary, in-person feature to this year’s show.

“Each year we host a design competition in the class and invite international judges to choose a winner and that winning piece gets built,” a spokesperson for the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Gallery said.

“It then gets raffled off at the year-end show and the winners keep the funds made.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 class did not host a show.

But both 2020 and 2021 graduating class will have items available for raffle at the Craft Connection in June.

“Last year the competition theme was ‘emotion’ and featured a Sappy Bench and this year it’s ‘sculptural furniture’, with the winner a Lapis Lazuli blue cube chair,” the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Gallery said.

Three students from the 2021 class have been chosen to compete at the AWFS Fresh Wood international students’ competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Their pieces have already competed in the online judging rounds and have been selected as finalists to compete in-person,” the Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Gallery said.
