Get set for round two on the downtown and waterfront master planning process this Thursday evening.

The City of Nelson is hosting the second kick at the Sustainable Waterfront and Downtown Master Planning process — that began in October — with a public workshop on Thursday, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Hume Room of the Hume Hotel.

The last public workshop drew several hundred people and some fireworks as the consultants and City staff drew fire on several topics, including the development being proposed for the East end of the city’s waterfront by David Sorenson.

The intent of the second workshop is to build upon the ideas and issues established in the first workshop — which identified ideas and issues for the waterfront and the downtown.

The workshop will focus on preliminary development concepts.

People are invited to comment on and add their own ideas to the drawings, similar to the original workshop, with the feedback expected to “inform the development of the Sustainable Waterfront and Downtown Master Plan,” according to a City of Nelson press release.

The waterfront and downtown master plans are intended to provide a vision for City Hall to link the downtown with the waterfront, and intensify land use by incorporating mixed uses (commercial, residential, industrial, public open space).

After the workshop, the ideas and drawings are expected to be summarized and posted on the City’s website at http://www.nelson.ca.

The first draft of the plans will be drawn up before Christmas, with the drafts going to City council in January and a final report coming out in March.

Where the plans come from:

The Sustainable Waterfront and Downtown Master Plan will draw on the goals and objectives established in the City of Nelson’s Path to 2040 Sustainability Strategy, created through a collaborative approach between the City and community members.
