Rushton, Sachs pace Neptunes to fifth place at Stingrays meet

Jaylen Rushton won a silver and Nava Sachs took bronze as Nelson Neptunes finished fifth at the Trail Stingrays stop on the Kootenay Summer Swim Association meet calendar Sunday in the Silver City.

Rushton won the medal in Division two girls while Sachs scored bronze for the Neptunes in Division five girls category.

Nelson finished fifth overall behind Kimberley, Grand Forks, host Trail and Castlegar in the Stingrays meet that featured a different format for swimmers.

Notable swims include Hannah Malafant’s 50 meter butterfly finishing for first in a close race; Ella Chouinard’s 50 meter backstroke, Arjun Bhabra’s 50 meter backstroke, Leah Eberle’s 50 meter freestyle on her relay and Paige Ross’ 200 meter individual medley. 

Cameron Bibby-Fox was also picked for the Male Austrailian start 50 meter freestyle race to represent the Neptunes where he finished in first and Chloe Malefant picked for the female finishing in third.

Meet records for Nelson went to Riley Andrusak in girls 25 meter backstroke and freestyle while Neptune coach Cynthia Pfeiffer set a new mark in 100 meter backstroke.

Pfeiffer earned the gold in Division 8 female category with assistant coach Rebecca Afford finishing with the bronze medal.

The Neptunes travel to Creston next weekend before making the trek south to Colville for the next two meets on the KSSA calendar.
