There may have been a few less cars, but that didn’t take away from huge crowds that flocked to the 2016 Nelson Road Kings Queen City Cruise this past weekend in the Heritage City.

After Mother Nature slowly moved the rain clouds away, the sun took over to shine down on the 14th annual show that gave spectators a look at some amazing rides, from classic muscle cars to brand new imports and the occasional motorcycle.

“I was a little worried about the weather this morning but it actually turned out to be perfect weather-wise,” said Jack Chambers, President of the Road Kings.

The event began Friday with the annual parade through Nelson.

Unfortunately there weren’t quite as many attendees this year, but that didn’t bother Chambers.

“There are lots of cars,” Chamber told The Nelson Daily after entries filled Baker Street from the 200 Block to the 700 Block as well as many of the side streets.

“We’re down in numbers from last year but it’s minimal, and really I don’t care as we had great support from the City of Nelson and the merchants that help us out with the prizes has been unbelievable.”

The winner for best in show was a man named Rick Wolk from Edmonton, Alberta.

Wolk brought his gorgeous 1949 Mercury for the first time this year and ended up walking away with the top prize.

“I saw that car the last two years at another show and I told the guy he should bring it up here because it’s a beautiful car,” said Chambers of the winning ride.

“Two weeks ago (Wolk) went to Spokane and won a trophy at the Good Guys car show, which is one of the biggest shows in the Western United States,” Chambers said.

Wolk, dressed appropriately in a sharp bowling shirt and rocking an Elvis-inspired hairdo, described the car with love in his eyes:

“Custom ’49, ’51 flavoured, jet black with a 429 Cobra Jet, she’s been chopped, dropped, slammed, powder puffed and fluffed; we did it all.”

“I’m totally flabbergasted I didn’t think I had the show, I’m totally speechless,” he said, speaking on his victory.

The fun is over for 2016 but the Road Kings executive is already starting to build for September 2017; which is plenty of time for classic car aficionados to get to work.
