For those about to replace their woodstove, we salute you.

New technology wood stoves are proven to burn one third less wood and reduce emissions by up to 70 per cent, significantly reducing the risk of chimney fires, according to the Provincial Woodstove Exchange Program.

That means a lot cleaner air in the region, particularly when the inversion is upon us in the thin strips of relatively flat land we cling to in the West Kootenay.

For some people living within the Regional District of Central Kootenay, they are eligible to receive a $250 rebate (from the Province) and another $100 from the RDCK, for replacing an old, non-EPA-certified wood burning woodstove with a qualified CSA/EPA approved one.

However, the old wood stove must have been rendered non-reusable and been recycled at a regional district facility. Rebates are limited, and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. At this time, program funding approval is pending.

The Woodstove Exchange Program is designed to encourage residents to exchange their old, inefficient, non-EPA certified wood burning appliances for low emissions appliances, including new CSA/EPA certified clean burning wood stoves and other qualified appliances.

To be eligible for both rebates you must live within the RDCK, and the wood stove exchange must take place within the RDCK. You will also be reimbursed for the cost of disposing your old stove (up to a maximum of $40).

Visit the Provincial Wood Stove Exchange Site at http://www.bcairquality.ca/topics/w…gram/index.html for more information.
