The Nelson Regional Sports Council is not taking this forced hiatus for amateur sport in the Heritage City due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 sitting down.

The Sports Council is hosting a social distanced meeting Tuesday, August 16th at 6:30 p.m. outside the Lakeside Soccer Fieldhouse on the Nelson waterfront to discuss how the community together can meet the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown of amateur sport.

“District’s all over the country are getting together to identify and solve the challenges by pooling ideas and resources. . .. Let’s do the same,” said Kim Palfenier of the NRSC.

Palfenier said there has been constant news and support from Provincial sport organizations, viaSport and Sport for Life, about implementing protocols. However, she added, there are other long-term implications of COVID-19 on our local and national sport systems that need addressing.

“Some stats about the challenges that sports groups are facing, or will face during the next season or two are a cause for concern,” Palfenier said.

“One prediction based on the most recent (during COVID) Sport for Life survey says — one in three groups in Canada will fold because of financial pressures caused by COVID protocols.”

“What would that look like in Nelson?” Palfenier added. “And which groups would they be?”

The NRSC hopes that does not happen in Nelson. And is hosting a meeting of the sports minds on the grass outside the Fieldhouse to discuss how Nelson sports groups can overcome the COVID-19 obstacles.

“Please attend or send someone from your group who would like to hear and share concerns about where your group is at now, or your concerns for your future season(s) and group’s longevity,” Palfenier said.

The meeting is open to all sports groups, not just organized groups. Those include Lunch-bucket leagues, Beer leagues, ad-hoc rec teams, yoga, etc.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
