RDCK issues Evacuation Alert for Duhamel/Sitkum due to North Shore wildfire

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre has has imposed an evacuation alert concerning the interface wildfire burning on the North Shore outside of Nelson, now called the Sitkum Creek Fire (#SitkumCreek).
(An interface fire is a wildland fire that puts communities and people at risk. A wind-driven wildland fire, out of control and moving fast, can quickly spread from the forest to threaten your family’s safety, home and property.)
The alert is due to the fire substaining significant growth, which has now reached an estimated 60 hectares.
The RDCK is advising residents in the area between Sitkum Creek South and Willow Point (Six Mile Lakes Road) to be aware of the alert as a precautionary measure for now.
Should conditions worsen the RDCK will advise residents immediately.
RDCK mapping indicates there are approximately 350 residences in the impacted area.
The alert will be in effect until further notice.
The Emergency Operations Centre is currently functioning at Level One.
The current fire danger rating in the majority of the Southeast Fire Centre is “high,” with some pockets rated “extreme” near Midway, Grand Forks, Kaslo and Revelstoke.
