RCMP said Monday the Southeast District Emergency Response Team was deployed to Grand Forks Saturday evening to assist with the apprehension of an emotionally distraught woman.

RCMP said Saturday, March 28, 2020 at approximately 7:45 p.m. Grand Forks RCMP received a request to respond to a residence in the 2100-block of 68th Avenue to check on the well-being of a local resident.

Police said at the scene frontline officers encountered an emotionally distraught adult woman, who they believed to be armed with a firearm.

“The woman refused to exit her home and allegedly threatened violence towards the responding officers,” the RCMP media release said.

“The Southeast District Containment Team were called in to secure the scene, while the Emergency Response Team deployed to the region along with specially trained RCMP Crisis Negotiators.”

Police said as a precautionary measure frontline officers closed a portion of 68th Avenue to all traffic and evacuated approximately 15 residents from a portion of the apartment building for their safety while negotiations remained active and ongoing.

‘“Despite all efforts to de-escalate the situation, and have the woman exit her home, tactically trained members were required to breach the door to her residence in order to apprehend her,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, RCMP Southeast District Media Relations Officer in a media release.”

Police said the 43-year-old Grand Forks woman was transported to hospital for a full medical assessment.

RCMP wish to extend their gratitude, especially to those residents temporarily evacuated from their homes for their patience and understanding during what was a very dynamic situation.

Residents were allowed to return back to their homes at approximately 6 a.m., Sunday.

RCMP also wish to thank the Grand Forks Fire Department and BC Emergency Health Services who were on hand to assist police.
