Nelson RCMP said a Ridgewood Road homeowner experienced a rude awakening Tuesday night after a black bear entered the residence located five kilometers north of the Heritage City on the North Shore.

Cpl. Michael Stefani of the Nelson RCMP said police dispatch received a call from the resident at 11 p.m. Tuesday of rustling inside the home.

“Upon getting up and looking out his bedroom door a black bear was seen looking at him from around a corner in the kitchen area down the hall,” Cpl. Stefani explained in the media release.

“The homeowner was able to climb out a window and call police.”

“The animal was described as a small black bear cub,” Stefani added.

Cpl. Stefani said after walking around the side of the house to the deck, he was also met by what looked like a mother black bear approximately 10 feet away.

He was able to scare off the bear.

However, upon closer inspection of the residence, Stefani said a side door on the deck had a screen pulled out of the window by the bear.

“It was unclear though if there was indeed a cub still in the house as the bear met outside was not a small animal,” Stefani said.

Cpl. Stefani said he then entered the residence and cleared it room by room. He was satisfied the bear was gone as nothing was located.

“It appears as if the bear went in and out the residence using the same window on the door,” Cpl. Stefani said.

“There was no damage to the interior of the house.”

Cpl. Stefani said there was also a small dog and cat in the house that were also unharmed by the bears attendance.

The public is advised to keep doors secured as bears are now looking for food. Anyone seeing a bear in the neighbourhood is urged to contact  is APP Hotline at 1-877-952-7277 or online at www.rapp.bc.ca.
