RCMP busy returning property to owners after crime spree arrests

One suspect remains in custody as Grand Forks RCMP work with their counterparts in Forensic Identification Section process hundreds of exhibits following a crime spree that included thefts in Cranbrook, Nelson and Castlegar.
In a media release, Grand Forks RCMP said that numerous criminal charges have been laid against the two suspects involved several break-and-enters, theft of mail, including thefts in Nelson earlier this month, and possession of property obtained by crime.
“One suspect remains in custody (while) one was released on court documents to appear in Court in Grand Forks at a later date,” Grand Forks RCMP said.
“RCMP members, including the Forensic Identification Section, continue to process several hundred exhibits and RCMP have already returned some property to its rightful owners.”
RCMP became aware of the crime spree that hit the West Kootenay in early January when it was reported that thefts involving small parcels, cards and general mail had been happening from compartments in community mailboxes in the Nelson area.
Then last week, police in Grand Forks were alerted by a citizen’s complaint in Christina Lake of a theft in progress from some Canada Post mailboxes.
RCMP attended, and were able to apprehend the suspects, and recover an extensive amount of stolen property, including a 2014 Dodge pickup truck.
“The investigation is on-going and RCMP will be seeking additional charges where appropriate,” the media release said.
“It is believed the suspects are responsible for other offences in Cranbrook, Nelson and Castlegar.”
RCMP ask the public not to attend the Grand Forks Detachment to enquire if we have your items as police are in the process of contacting the owners of the property recovered.
“As this is an active criminal investigation, the property will be returned as soon as we possibly can,” police said.
Grand Forks RCMP said police are working with Canada Post to return the stolen mail.
