Early Tuesday morning, RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett, 32, died of injuries suffered in a crash in Langford on Vancouver Island.

Premier Christy Clark has issued the following statement about the death of Const. Sarah Beckett:

“Early this morning in Langford, Const. Sarah Beckett was on duty when her police cruiser was involved in a collision with a truck. Despite the best efforts of first responders on the scene, they were unable to save her.

“My thoughts are with Const. Beckett’s colleagues in the RCMP, and especially with her husband and her two young children. Nothing anyone can say will ease their pain during such a dark time. In the years to come, I hope they will take comfort in the knowledge that their mother was a hero.

“Each and every day, police officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep the rest of us safe. We should all take the opportunity to thank them more often.”

“Today is a tragic and difficult day,” RCMP Chief Supt. Ray Bernoties said at a news conference. “Today, we lost one of our own. This morning I met with her family, who must now start to deal with this absolute tragedy.”

RCMP said the officer’s cruiser was involved in a collision with a pickup truck at about 3:30 a.m. Beckett was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup truck is in hospital and in police custody.
