Polytechnique shooting commemorated in Nelson with candlelight vigil

More than 50 people took to the City Hall Courtyard in Nelson Wednesday to participate in a candlelight vigil to remember women murdered at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.
The vigil was part of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada, established by the Parliament of Canada.
Nelson City Councilor Valerie Warmington led the ceremony whereprominent men from Nelson, including Nelson Police Chief Paul Burkart, Nelson Fire Chief Len MacCharles, RCMP members and Nelson Leafs assistant coach Sean Dooley, each taking turns in laying a rose in memory of the 14 women at a temporary monument at the base of the Cenotaph.
Each of the names of the 14 women were announced during the vigil.
The Commemorative Candlelight vigil and shoe memorial is hosted by the Nelson Violence against Women in Relationships Committee.
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada.
The day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.
They died because they were women.
