Police continue search after man takes shot a RCMP

Details are slowly coming our from various news media about the police incident that began Thursday afternoon in Slocan.

According to the Vancouver Province RCMP said the incident began around 12:21 p.m. when police from the Slocan/New Denver detachment responded to “a dispute between two individuals” on Slocan West Road near Gravel Pit Road.

“While on scene, a male suspect allegedly fired upon police with a long rifle before retreating into the surrounding forest,” said RCMP Const. Kris Clark in a media release.

“The suspect is believed to be armed with multiple firearms.”

As a result of the police advised the 350 residents of Slocan to remain indoors while they search for the gunman, who took shots at police Thursday.

Police locked down the school in Slocan, W.E. Graham Elementary, Thursday afternoon.

Later, staff and students successfully executed an evacuation plan to return everyone to their respective homes said Kootenay Lake School District No. 8 Superintendent Jeff Jones.

RCMP are on the scene from Nelson, Castlegar, Nakusp and New Denver.

The Province said unconfirmed reports had the man being served with an eviction notice from the house he had been renting on Slocan River Road.

The newspaper was told by a resident the man kept cows, pigs and chickens on a small lot and he had come to the attention of the local Society for the Protection of Animals on numerous occasions.

The newspaper said B.C. SPCA confirmed that investigators have attended a home on Slocan River Road twice, including once on Thursday morning.
