Players 'loving being back on the field' as NSA opens doors

It’s definitely not business as usual for minor sports groups and organizations in Nelson due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, with the province opening up from spring lockdown in phases, some, including Nelson Soccer Association, are now offering programs for players.
Monday through Thursday at the Lakeside Soccer Field, Brett Adams, Regional Coach for the Vancouver Whitecaps, is spearheading Phase one of the Return to Play program for players from 10-years to adults and college players.
“We have followed all of the BC government health guidelines as well as implementing BC soccer’s Return to Play Phase one model,” Adams told The Nelson Daily.
“This is based on no contact” Adams added.
“We are making sure that the players, staff and volunteers’ safety is our priority.”
NSA staff has set up grid systems for players to practice individual skills inside their respective areas.
Coaches guide players through drills during their practice times.
Adams said each player has their own ball.
There is a gap between each session, which allows NSA staff to switch out and disinfect balls.
Adams said 200 NSA players have registered to player in categories that range from U10 boys and girls to U17.
Sessions run from Tuesday to Thursday at Lakeside.
Adams said there are also three adult groups — U24 College session, Ladies Rec and Men’s Masters.
“Parents and players are loving being back on the field,” Adams explained.
“Players and parents have respected the guidelines and been extremely impressed with the fun and the content of the sessions.”
There are other sports groups in Nelson also attempting to find their way by offering programs during these troubling times, including Glacier Gymnastics Club, Nelson Boxing Club and a variety of private gyms.
