Operational Fuel Treatment Work starting throughout RDCK

Nora Hannon, Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator for the Regional District of Central Kootenay said areas identified as high risk for wildfire are benefiting from operational fuel treatment work, in an effort to protect adjacent communities and critical infrastructure from potential wildfires.
In a media release Hannon said the RDCK has commenced or is about to commence fuel treatment work at the following locations:
- 19.6 hectares at the water intake in Lister, to protect critical infrastructure
- 29.2 hectares in Kingsgate, between Whitetail Road and Shorty Creek FSR
- 10.3 hectares at Kozma Road in Harrop
- 12.5 hectares above the community of Lardeau
- 3.5 hectares below the community of Argenta
- 3.2 hectares in Bonnington Regional Park
- 22.9 hectares South of Riondel
- 7 hectares North of Nelson along the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail
Hannon said further operational treatment work has been ongoing for 8.3 hectares on the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail to the South of Nelson, 11.7 hectares East of Boswell and 22.9 hectares South of Riondel.
She said work is scheduled to start next spring to protect critical infrastructure for 4.7 hectares at the Fauquier water reservoir and for 9.1 hectares in the community of Burton.
Hannon said funding for these projects was made available through grants from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative through UBCM, Columbia Basin Trust and local government contribution.
Hannon said Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail South of Nelson may see intermittent closures Monday to Friday in November.
