Letters to the Editor

Dear Parents:

It is February, and the strike action taken by members of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) throughout the Province of British Columbia is still continuing.

This is the sixth month of their action, and this marks a year of collective bargaining.

At this point, teachers are still in Phase One of their action. This phase of the...

Editor, The Nelson Daily

Do we accept Stephen Harper’s “new Canadian patriotism”?

We in the Kootenays, with pacificist traditions from Quakers, Doukhobors, and Viet Nam war resisters, surely must be alerted by a Prime Minister with a vision of Canada standing tall with military muscle beside imperial nations like America and Britain.

I fear that maybe...

The best way to explain my issue would be in chronological order but would require a longer article to accomplish.

A condensed version, in this case, is applicable.

On December 30th  at 3:50 p.m., our vehicle was caught in a collision with what best described was a pothole.

The pothole measured 48 inches long by 20 inches wide and was 7-1/2 to 8-1/2 inches deep....

To the Editor, The Nelson Daily

I write this from a big city, Victoria, during the holiday.

The new year has begun today, and I am moved to reflect on what Nelson might expect from the downstream effects of the Occupation events in 2011. From an urban landscape, which is the habitat of most planetary residents, I can see more clearly.

Does Nelson have...

I read with interest the article that appeared in the December 9, 2011, edition of The Castlegar Source entitled, “MP wants bottled water banned.”

In the piece, BC South Interior MP Alex Atamanenko based his recent statement about bottled water in the House of Commons on information that has long been confirmed as false — mythology one typically finds on anti-bottled water...

To the Editor,

What did the Occupiers accomplish, and how has the Occupation changed Nelson and local politics?

The Oct. 15 march was a one-off, a great occasion for our local vocal middle class liberals and progressives to replay their radically-youthful politics from the 1960's and '70's. After that day, the real...

To the Editor,

A friend commented last week how badly she felt not knowing a way to support this movement.

Encampments do not appear to be a sustainable way to keep the issues in the public eye through the media.

I propose inviting others to write letters to the editor and maintaining some belief that your...

To the Editor:

We of Occupy Nelson would like to thank the City of Nelson, the Nelson City Police and the helpful folks on City Council for assisting us with dismantling the physical Occupation in front of City Hall.

We would like to thank the incredibly helpful (and ever-thoughtful) City manager for waiting until our most vulnerable...

To the Editor:

This letter is addressed first to the two soldiers of Canada who’ve served in Afghanistan and spoke to me at my one-man protest  Remembrance Day.

I want to thank them for the conversation and say why I half-agreed with their request, to the extent that I moved a half-block away...

To the Editor:

New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Alex Atamanenko is concerned about genetically modified (GM) foods. Great… But how does he explain the two NDP premiers who established the GM industry’s permanent presence in Western Canada?

In all the media coverage of Atamanenko’s discussions on genetic modification, not one reporter has ever asked him why...
