Slocan Valley Recreation’s Hockey Day in Winlaw finally took place on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the rink behind Sleep is for Sissies — a year late and right on time.

Originally scheduled to coincide with the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the weather finally cooperated (that string of really cold weather was good for something … right).

Five teams were created from those who showed up on short notice, each representing a randomly selected nation.

After a series of hotly contested games and a lot of laughs (and panting from the ‘seasoned’ players), Team Belarus walked away with the hand-made gold medals. Team members were Liam Stewart, Robin Dupont, Monica Unseld and Mike Gardener.

Many thanks to Kevin Sutherland and friends for creating and maintaining the rink and to the kids from Winlaw School who made the flags (last year) for the nations represented, and Stillpoint Pottery for creating the medals. See you all next year.
