NPD start New Year with arrest of two men for theft, assault

Two men started 2016 dealing with the long arm of the law according to a Nelson Police Department media release.

Police were called Monday night (January 4) to a local grocery store to deal with a shoplifter.

The call came in at 8:35 p.m. that staff witnessed the local male acting suspicious in the parking lot and then entering the grocery store.

An officer attended the store and located the 27 year-old man stuffing and concealing grocery items into his large jacket.

Police arrested the man, releasing the 27-year-old on a Promise to Appear and an Undertaking and is scheduled to attend Nelson Provincial Court on March 8, 2016.

Police would like to thank the alert staff at a local business for calling the police.

Pepper spray assault in downtown core

Sunday night (January 3), just after midnight NPD officers were called to the downtown core following a report of a man allegedly pepper sprayed another male.

Police located and arrested the 23-year-old man, who is known to police, for assault with a weapon.

The man fled the original scene of the crime, but was located shortly afterwards by Nelson Police hiding in a residence. 

Nelson Police are recommending charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon contrary to an order.

The man was released shortly afterwards on a Promise to Appear and an Undertaking and is scheduled to attend Nelson Provincial Court on March 8, 2016.
