North Shore Firefighters deal with vehicle fire on Johnstone Road

This car was fully engulfed in flames when North Shore Fire arrived on scene Tuesday night on Johnstone Road north of Nelson.

Quick response by members of the North Shore Fire Department possibly averted what could have been a horrific event said the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

The incident began at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday (August 8) on Johnstone Road, just across the Big Orange Bridge north of Nelson, when a vehicle was reported on fire.

North Shore Fire Chief Fred Schnieder said the department responded with four trucks and 14 firefighters to the scene of the car fire.

"At the time of arrival the vehicle was fully involved and had moved into the grass area above it," Schnieder explained.

"The fire was quickly extinguished using water and foam and the grass area was soaked down to prevent any spreading of the fire."

Schnieder said there was no report of any injuries. The vehicle was a total write-off.

Schnieder said BC Wildfire crews were also on scene to assist with the the containment of the fire.
