No one was injured during a structure fire in downtown Castlegar this afternoon, according to Fire Chief Gerry Rempel.

Rempel said the call came in at about 2:40 p.m., to attend a fire in single-family home in the 300 Block of 6 Avenue.

“We put it out quite quickly, but there’s substantial smoke damage,” Rempel said, adding the house was empty but for two cats at the time. It was a relative popping by who smelled smoke and alerted the fire department.

“The two cats are fine,” Rempel added.

He said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but it originated in the kitchen area.
