No one injured after bear shreds camp near Red Sands Beach

After a man was charged by a grizzly last week on the Great Northern Trail above Stanley Street entrance and the Nelson Cemetery Nelson Police report another possible bear encounter Thursday evening near Red Sands Beach on Bealby Road.
Nelson Police dispatch received a call Thursday (May 4) at approximately 9:13 pm of a possible party at Red Sands Beach.
When police arrived, they located two people carrying camping equipment off the beach. NPD said the pair advised police that they had set up a tent earlier in the evening.
However, upon returning, they noticed the tent had been shredded and some of the their personal belongings destroyed.
The pair also noticed a bear nearby and quickly left the area.
Police checked the area but the bear had already departed.
The Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that there is no public camping in the city limits, with the exception of the Nelson City Campground.
In addition, the NPD would like to remind the public that this is the time for bears to be looking for food and to ensure that garbage, compost, and waste products are disposed of in a secure manner to avoid any possible confrontations with wildlife.
