Nitros edge Leafs in OT thriller

For the second straight meeting, the Kimberley Dynamiters prevailed over the Nelson Leafs.

Devon Langelaar scored with one second remaining in the first overtime period to spark the Nitros to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Leafs in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Thursday night in the Bavarian City.

Kimberley edged the Leafs 2-1 in the previous meeting between the two clubs on opening weekend of the KIJHL.

Kimberley opened the scoring midway through the first period when Chase Gedny combined with Brock Palmer to beat Nelson goalie Josh Williams on the power play.

The score remained the same until Logan Wullum tied the game with five minutes remaining in the contest.

In overtime, after Brendan Makay was whistled for a hooking penalty by referee Chris Mottl allowing Kimberley the advantage and Langelaar the chance to combine with teammate Matt Davies to score the winning tally past Williams.

Kimberley finished the game out shooting the Leafs 38-25, including a 2-0 margin in overtime.

The single point lifts Nelson into sole possession of first place in the Murdoch Division, one point in front of Grand Forks Border Bruins.

Kimberley continues to be the class of the Eddie Mountain Division, with a nine-point advantage over second place Creston Valley Thunder Cats.

Nelson, 9-2-1-0-1, resumes its three-game swing through the Eddie Mountain Division with a game tonight in Golden.

Saturday, Nelson visits Columbia Valley Rockies in Invermere to conclude the road trip.

Next home action is Friday, October 27 against Golden Rockets at 7 p.m. in the NDCC Arena.
