New COVID-19 cases declining in West Kootenay, Boundary regions

The weekly Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence map recently Wednesday shows most the West Kootenay on a decline.

The weekly report released by the BC Centre of Disease Control, between September 12-18, 2021, has Trail at 17 as the area with the highest case count in the West Kootenay.

Nelson is next with 11 new COVID-19 cases while Castlegar has six.

The previous week — September 5-11, 2021 — had Nelson and Trail both with 41 cases.

Arrow Lakes had four new COVID-19 cases while there was zero in the Kootenay Lake area.

The most recent data in the Boundary region, had Grand Forks with 24 reported new COVID-19 cases while Kettle Valley had four.

Those numbers are down from 32 and 12, for Grand Forks and Kettle Valley, respectively.

In the East Kootenay, Cranbrook reported the most COVID-19 cases with 47 while Fernie had 34.

Creston reported 19, an increase of two from the previous week, while Windermere had 11, Kimberley eight and Golden four.

The highest reported COVID-19 cases in Interior Health region are in Central Okanagan/Kelowna (257), Kamloops (158) and Vernon (112).

Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported 759 new cases of COVID-19, including 25 epi-linked cases, for a total of 180,937 cases in the province.

Of the active cases, 324 individuals are in hospital and 157 are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

The new/active cases include:

  • 214 new cases in Fraser Health — Total active cases: 1,734
  • 101 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health — Total active cases: 877
  • 233 new cases in Interior Health — Total active cases: 1,223
  • 129 new cases in Northern Health — Total active cases: 943
  • 79 new cases in Island Health — Total active cases: 636
  • three new cases of people who reside outside of Canada — Total active cases: 45

During the past 24 hours, Ministry of Health reported 10 new deaths, for an overall total of 1,910.

The new deaths include:

  • Fraser Health: seven
  • Vancouver Coastal Health: two
  • Island Health: one

There are three COVID-19 outbreaks in the Kootenay Region:

  • Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail psychiatry unit has two patient cases.
  • Hardy View Lodge long-term care in Grand Forks has five cases: one resident and four staff.
  • Joseph Creek Village long-term care in Cranbrook has 14 cases: nine residents and five staff, with two deaths connected to the outbreak.
